Hot Stone Therapy
Hot Stone Therapy is a specialty massage that uses smooth, heated stones. The black volcanic rock, typically basalt, absorbs and retains heat well.
The heated stones provide a deeply soothing, relaxing form of massage that helps tight muscles release.
During the Hot Stone Massage
- Before you arrive, the massage therapist sanitizes the stones and heats them in 120 and 150 degree water in a roaster.
- The therapist uses traditional strokes of Swedish massage while holding the heated stones. As the stones cool, the therapist replaces them with another.
- The therapist might also leave the heated stones at specific points along your spine, in the palms of your hand, or even between your toes to improve the circulation or flow of energy in your body.
- If you have inflammation or muscle injury, cold stones, typically made of marble are sometimes used.
Additional information about the Hot Stone Massage:
- There are various shapes and sizes of stones used by the therapist for the different parts of the body.
- The heat of the stones helps muscles release more quickly than in traditional massage.
- If the stones are too warm or the pressure is too intense, you should speak up since each individual has their own threshold levels.
- The technique is very important. Less experienced practitioners sometimes heat the stones too high or use too much pressure. Ask where they were trained and how long they have been practicing.
